Sedation Dentistry

Sedation Dentistry Aurora

Many people are scared to visit the dentist. In fact, they will postpone important and necessary dental care because they are worried about the pain they may experience, or they suffer from dental anxiety. The good news is that here in Aurora, at Village Green Dental, we can help you conquer your fear of dentistry by offering sedation.

Sedation dentistry is used to provide a relaxing and anxiety-free experience while receiving your dental treatment. Now, you do not need to compromise your oral health because of a phobia. Sedation is most appropriate for people who have a real fear that prevents them from going to the dentist. However, it may also be appropriate for those who have a low pain threshold, are unable to sit still in the dentist’s chair, have a bad gag reflex, have very sensitive teeth, or need a large amount of dental work done.

Though there is always a risk in receiving anesthesia, sedation is generally considered safe. Dr. Jason A. Monroe, DDS, and his team will ask you about your medical health history and any medications you are taking, determining if you are an appropriate candidate for sedation.

We offer two different types of sedation:

Inhalation - Nitrous Oxide (laughing gas) is a commonly requested mild sedation, which is administered by a small nose-hood placed over the nose, before and during the treatment. Aside from tingling and numbness, nitrous oxide typically gives an overall feeling of well-being. It is a safe and proven method to reduce your anxiety or fear during your dental procedure. Since you are awake and only relaxed, recovery is quick, and there are no after-effects so you can resume your normal activities immediately.

Oral - An extremely common technique is oral sedation, which is considered a moderate form of sedation. It is easy and does not require the use of needles. A prescription pill is taken about an hour before your appointment and will have you fully relaxed by the time you arrive at our office. This sedation does not cause you to sleep, but it will diminish your awareness of pain, sounds, and smells. A major benefit of oral sedation is that patients often feel like their procedure only lasted a few minutes when in fact it may have taken much longer. Because of this, we are often able to increase the number of procedures done at one time which means fewer appointments. A responsible caregiver will need to drive you to and from the appointment.

With sedation, as well as any time you are in our office, we will ensure that you are feeling comfortable during the entire length of your visit, and will monitor your vital signs so we can adjust as necessary.

If you are concerned about an upcoming dental procedure, ask us about having dental sedation. It is a simple and easy way to get yourself past your worries about dental issues that cause you pain and anxiety. Contact us today for more information or to schedule an appointment.
